IF I WERE A CAT I WOULD WANT TO BE A MAINE COON - by Grace Cox

More than a century ago I traveled the world on large sailing ships with sea captains from New England, Asia and Europe. I found my way to Maine, and in mating with the domestic cats in this area, established myself as one of the oldest natural breeds in North America.

I am hardy and handsome, and well equipped to handle the harsh climate of Maine. I have a glossy, shaggy coat that is water resistant to protect me against the wet weather. To help me stay warm and dry when I sleep, I wrap my large bushy tail around me. My big, round tufted feet are my snowshoes. To increase my sight and hearing, I have large eyes and ears. My ears are heavily furred both inside and out. The hair on the insides are called furnishings, and the hair on the outside are called lynx tips.

I am muscular and big boned, and the largest of the domestic cats. My full size is not achieved until I am 3 to 5 years old. Although I am known for my size I am also known for my gentle nature, as I am referred to as "the gentle giant". While my voice is much smaller than my size, I have a definite, distinctive chirping trill.

If you are looking for a cat to be a friend to you for life, then I am what you need. I will love you unconditionally and be your best supporter, in good times and in bad. No one should ever be without at least one Maine Coon Cat.

Tropikoons (previously Coonoquan) is a small "in-home" cattery.  Our kittens are raised underfoot with lots of playing and hugs and kisses.  Strangers do not exist for my kittens, everyone is their friend. I am committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized kittens for winning in the show hall or as cherished pets.
I primarily show in CFA (Cat Fanciers Association). I am also a registered breeder in TICA (The International Cat Association). I am a long-standing member of MCBFA (The Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association) which is an organization dedicated to the preservation of our wonderful breed and we do comply with MCBFA's Code of Ethics

All of our kittens are indoor only and declawing is prohibited.

Kittens are Felv/Fiv negative and also free of bacterial diseases and parasites. They have had their 1st set of immunizations for Feline Rhinotrachetis-Calici-Panleukopenia at 8 weeks and another at 11 weeks, been given a wormer and certified healthy by a veterinarian. I do not recommend the Feline Leukemia or the FIP vaccine, neither is necessary for indoor only cats. Kittens are using a litter box and are trained to a scratching post or tree for scratching.
In order to produce Quality kittens, all of my breeding cats are either Champions or Grand Champions in CFA. Annually, all adult breeding cats are echoed for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. All breeding cats are negative for the SMA gene as well as the HCM gene. Annually all breeding cats are echoed for HCM by color-doppler ultrasound and were most recently sceened June of 2009. All breeding cats are x-rayed  for hip dysplasia by two years of age.

Disclaimer: Screening for HCM is the currently recommended method to aid in reducing the incidence of this inherited condition in cats. However, I cannot guarantee that any cat will not have this condition. Tropikoons can only guarantee our dedication to screening our breeding cats in an effort to produce healthy sound Maine Coons to the best of our ability..
